Adoption & Termination of Parental Rights

Every situation is unique. Our knowledgeable attorneys have more than 50 years of combined experience in family law, including every type of adoption, such as:

  • Stepparent adoption – We represent stepfathers or stepmothers in formally adopting a child to “make it official” and to establish inheritance, parenting authority, and other legal rights and obligations. This requires terminating the natural parents’ rights, which may be voluntary, unopposed, or involve contested proceedings.
  • Private or agency adoptions – We represent adoptive parents or birth parents in these arrangements, from subsidizing the costs of prenatal care to the terms of adoption (open or closed). We also handle surrogacy arrangements.
  • Foreign adoptions – When adopting a child from Russia, Romania, or other countries, questions about the paperwork or legalities may surface later. We do not facilitate foreign adoptions, but we provide “re-adoption” under the laws of Illinois for an added layer of protection.
  • Third-party adoptions – If a child has been orphaned, abandoned, or removed from the care of the natural parents, we can represent grandparents, aunts/uncles, godparents, adult siblings, or nonfamily parties in formal custody and adoption proceedings.
